The journal entries, and accompanying art, document the lives of a father and son who, in the s, survive being lost at sea. James Gurney is so devoted to the world of Dinotopia, to the culture, the language, the dinotppia, the clothing, and the characters, that I am amazed even today at how seriously I take the book. And I’m not sure I ever got past that. The carnivores are actually very respectful of this and always wait for the dinosaur to pass peacefully, never attacking them while alive.

The dinosaurs, according to their own legends, have inhabited the island for millions of years, having sought shelter in the underground caverns during the climate changes that caused the extinction of dinosaurs elsewhere on the planet.
