I’m personally going through Segoe&Seigen Tesuji Dictionary – it is more of a problem book than Fujisawa dictionary – but I think it would be too. I discovered early that I recognize a lot of the problems. This strikes me as the most rational way to study and is maybe why the book is so highly regarded.

Just out of curiosity, anyone know how much such translation rights cost, and the prospect of being able to publish such a translation and NOT lose money? Anon marked it as to-read May 22, Section 1 of this part can be rendered “development” of single stones rather than positions but it is actually the direct Japanese equivalent of haengma. Gambit Research marked it as to-read Jan 08, In all these sections think of tesuji as “how to play”, or at least forget any notion of brilliancy.
Tesuji for Life and Death part 2, and for the Endgame Part 4 of the series: Now the Fujisawa work seems to be a much more scholarly and thorough rendering of that whole ‘syllabus’, which has often been recycled through magazines and hack collections. Matt added it Nov 07, Gresil Fujisawa’s dictionary was a popular item at Sensei’s even before its translation to English. The Davies book, on the other hand, strikes me as someone who has worked over many of the Japanese books as fresh in approach.

That said, sometimes the drivel can be extremely funny, as in one English text book for foreigners that a friend once showed me, which taught one how to say “I say, why don’t you go to the Fishmongers and buy us some haddock for our tea? The other diagrams very often represent acceptable play that is either not quite so efficient as the preferred option, or that is appropriate to a different strategy.

It’s made of win and king, so to say. Brute-forcing takes a long time, you most likely will not solve as many problems as you could when looking at the answers in one session and my experience is that shapes and vital points become more familiar the more problems you solved.
I think it’s important for everyone who does tsumego to be aware that both factions exist, though, and I think anyone who looks at the answers and finds they’ve got a significant number wrong is doing something wrong – either by doing tsumego that are funisawa hard or fujisaws not spending enough time on fjuisawa.
Again the text here is important in every sense. I particularly like that “Get Strong at Tesuji” has solutions on the reverse page.

But I’m probably not the only one. Dn marked it as to-read Apr 15, Fujisawa Shuko ‘s Dictionary of Basic Tesuji is neither a dictionary nor limited to tesuji ; it is rather, as Charles Matthews puts it, the “current standard work” collecting and categorizing moves by function, not form. Every now and then a whole-board position teesuji a game is given.
