I particularly enjoyed the scenes where the author was poking fun at Herodotus’s narrative style. This was apparently a thing back then.

And then, there was an amazing military siege and several other narrative flourishes to surprise and keep one engaged. And the development of literature from ancient to rokance has not been one of gradual linear progress from primitive to a sudden late discovery of advanced forms, but rather, everything inventive that goes into the creation of a great novel has been with us helodorus a long long time, and there have been a great variety of interesting digressions and quirks along the way, all participating in a sort of dialog of innovation.

It’s not easy to find, however. They are captured by pirates, meet bandits and many other characters along the way. I thought it was entertaining enough but not something I really felt that I was missing out on by not having read it previously. Any time she is about to be married to one of her capturers, she and Theagenes either escape or are rescued, only to be recaptured by someone else, sometimes within minutes. Plot devices abound – pirates, kidnapping, mistaken identities, stories within stories within stories, love, lust, obsession Helioeorus wit, the ravages of war, economic relationships, ethnic diversity and acceptance, political wranglings, and issues of identity and self-definition in an increasingly cosmopolitan world.

They are written in prose, and they inevitably feature a virtuous young couple whose love is tested by a variety of fantastic tribulations before they can finally live happily ever after. This story details the travails and adventures she encounters with her Greek love Theagenes as she journies and reclaims her birthright with the help of various people along the way. The rest of the story was in an older form of English which was much more difficult to read. It has the gravity of Shakespeare’s tragedies without itself being a tragedy. The Greek novels are romances that all share certain features. If it was a modern book, it would just be okay.

Heliodorus accomplishes this by way of nested narratives, primarily between two men who, by various accidents, have an interest in Theagenes and Charicleia: At times, it was surprising how modern and familiar the tropes were, and it was fun to see now-common sights like certain animals described from an ancient point of view.
