Her father, originally born in the Ne Call Me Maria is a great story about a Puerto Rican girl who moves to New York with a father that was born there. I agree that the story line is a very easy plot with little to no conflict or action.

This book really shows how to find a happy place with yourself and how to deal with what could be different and weird situations. Her description of barrio life and culture makes me want to go there and see it for myself. What is beautiful about this book is not just the sincerity with which Maria confronts all of the changes in her life but the playfulness that she exhibits through her language. One reason why I would recommend this book is because it was a very easy plot line to get into and to understand, with little to no action.


I’ve studied Spanish, so it was no problem for me. Maria sympathizes with Mr. Maria uses poems, rhymes, and songs to help her learn, and I would encourage my mwria to do the same.

I would use this book in my future classroom to talk about naria to a “new life”, moving, or having your parents separate, which is common in today’s society.
