I should have loved this book – because it touches all the subjects I am interested in – film passion, revolt, sexuality, but instead, I sort of yawned. As the devoted Eva Green enthusiast, it was only a matter of time before this novel found its way into my hands and, whilst different to the film, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
In my opinion, this book is a must-read classic, an absolutely wonderful piece of literature. In changing the sexual arrangements of the characters, Bertolucci ends up noly a film that is comprehensively different in both spirit and letter. Maybe this review will change somewhere down the line, once my mind shifts into a more passionately enthusiastic state, but for now, it shall remain to be yhe that this novel was average.

I love Gilbert Adair’s way with words. What else were these rats, these fanatics, these denizens of the night, but vampire bats wrapping themselves in the cloak of their own shadows? Amazingly to those of us who knew Adair as a gentle, fastidious, bookish wit, holh young Gilbert threw stones at the police. I enjoyed it, but the film was the better of the two media this time. Reviewers tend to be shocked by creative differences which really ought to be considered par for the course; of course the film is going to seem different from the novel.
