For weeks it was the only book I read, and in an odd way it rejuvenated me. I was unable to return to the bookstore for several weeks; in those intervening days I lapsed into a deep depression.

Ducasse’s prose is hallucinatory, every word, every phrase drips with opium metaphor and luciferian vocabulary. It is an impenetrable and maddening book. Taken with its prose but penniless, I hid the book away in an obscure corner, behind a copy of the Bible, an unintended irony.
