It’s a difficult book, at least to me at the time last year. May 09, Jimmy added it. Even though the style is very old fashioned the message is current and penetrating and profound. Well worth the wait to the penultimate chapter when he discusses the benefit of trials. It was a saying of that worthy man, Dr. I found this one to be VERY worthwhile. One of the most timely and encouraging books I’ve read in a long time.

God is such a mighty and wonderful God! See the Puritans in a new light as well, though quaint, they’re quite human mysterry not divorced from the realities of life, as you may have imagined. Flavel provides excellent reasons for trusting the providence of God, and I found his reasons for recording the acts of providence in our lives to be especially helpful.
I highly recommend this book, and if you are able to, read it with another person willing to discuss it together, or a small group. May 17, Wallace rated it myxtery was amazing. Like any good Puritan pastor he takes this doctrine and examines it from numerous different angles.
Finally, our Christian witness will not be crippled, as many fear, but quickened by a right apprehension of the sovereignty of God.
Flavel provides an abundant store of examples of God’s providence. This book is a throwback to May 10, Jeff Shelnutt rated it really liked it Shelves: For example, Flavel encourages his readers to thank God’s providence that they were not born in America, that barbarous land, but in England where they were brought up well-instructed in the Christian faith.
Most of the book, however, is simply Scriptural truth, applicable to any believer at any time and in any place. He continued to minister at Diptford for about six years, succeeding the senior minister when he died, and endearing himself greatly to the people, not only by his earnestness, but by his easy dealings with them in the matter of tithes.
