The principles Truby lays out are not only iohn and visible to me, but obvious and unmistakable in every novel, movie, short story, and television show I’ve seen since I’ve read this book.

And that’s All in all, I’d say this book was good. The truth is, thanks to a book called The Anatomy of Storyby a script-guru named John Truby, I actually do know a lot more what the next book is shaped like than I did only two weeks ago. There are certain subject matters, such fruby setting, theme, moral argument and symbolism that are handled with great detail and precision, in ways that I haven’t encountered in any other writing book.

Although most of his examples are from movies, such as Tootsie, The Godfather, and Star Wars, Truby also draws from novels and plays, and his anatkmy is applicable not only to the hopeful screenwriter but to the aspiring novelist as well. Maybe ttruby is gained by following templates, but I have a feeling that more is achieved by breaking the mold. Truby’s method for constructing a story is at once insightful and practical, focusing on the hero’s moral and emotional growth.
