The reference here is to the fact that the women give birth to the warriors and the men then pretty much send them out to get killed. The most egregious example of this comes at the end of the play, in the last duden speech made by the now united chorus of men and women.

Women sorting the men out, more than years ago. In the final portion of this review, I wish to point out what I consider to be minor flaws in the translation itself. There’s no real suggestion of foreignness. They shrieked for hours and then for days. I know some people absolutely love this translation of the play; and to it’s credit, the translator of course does have some backup.

As for just the translation if you ignore all this modern BS in a 5th century society? I would say this play is a bit lysistratta to men, not as much as women, but it does dictate that men cannot function unless their penis is inside someone’s vagina.
They had no political power and were expected to have no political opinions, either. lyzistrata Probably comes as close to capturing what we know of Athenian “humor” as any translation I’ve read. It also means it most likely the crudest one that exists at this point, but that’s what also makes it better; for the original play written in Ancient Greek was very crude and did not shy away from sexual matters and foul language.

The anti-war message, and the reminders to both sides that they have reason to feel gratitude, not enmity, to the other, comes through loud and clear, and I give Aristophanes a lot of kudos for that. Although, this is one of those Ancients that they trot out on a regular basis here in Cyprus – it’s a comedy.

I loved how strong-willed and confident she was instead of being more lenient and Nevertheless some readers will no doubt feel that she goes too far. It was tough trying to get words out of the overwhelming emotional vortex; an obstinate ketchup bottle guden the need of a fried potato for the tangy goodness.
