lyzistrata Probably comes as close to capturing what we know of Athenian “humor” as any translation I’ve read. It also means it most likely the crudest one that exists at this point, but that’s what also makes it better; for the original play written in Ancient Greek was very crude and did not shy away from sexual matters and foul language.

The anti-war message, and the reminders to both sides that they have reason to feel gratitude, not enmity, to the other, comes through loud and clear, and I give Aristophanes a lot of kudos for that. Although, this is one of those Ancients that they trot out on a regular basis here in Cyprus – it’s a comedy.
